  • Profil: Biomedlab Co. is a frontier bioventure company focusing on the development of artificial heart, DNA chips, and other biomedical products, established as a manufacturer of medical devices in September 1994 by young scientists from the Department of Medical Engineering, Seoul National University including Dr. Jongwon Kim, the president. In the field of artificial heart, Biomedlab has developed Hemopulsa, a ventricle-assisting device, which assists heart function by circulating part of the blood through an external pump and works as a bridging device in the heart transplant. Hemopulsa will be commercialized in a near future after finishing clinical studies performed in Seoul National University Hospital, Korea University Hospital, and Buchon Sejong Hospital. Also, an Implantable Ventricular Assist Device (IVAD) and Korean Total Artificial Heart (KORTAH), an implantable total artificial blood pump, are under development for commercial use. In the field of image processing, Biomedlab has elaborated ChIPS, a CCD-based chromosome image processing system, for commercialization and developed advanced diagnostic systems including Patho-Net, an internet-based diagnostic system for cervical cancer, and ChIPS-Net, an internet network diagnostic system utilizing CGH (Comparative Genomic Hybridization), FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization), and Server/Client System. In the field of Biotechnology, Biomedlab has developed artificial tissue patches with excellent anti-calcification effect that can substitute biological tissues, and diagnostic DNA chips including HPV chip for detection and genotyping of Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) causing cervical cancer and TB chip for screening drug-resistance in tuberculosis.
